On Thursday night, Woody Paige twittered that he almost had a heart attack! Somewhere in the Chicago suburbs, the two Jays (Mariotti and Cutler) were spilling their imitation Crystale. And in a quiet part of Denver, John Elway smiled his horsey grin and took another sip from his million dollar cognac.
The reason? The Denver Broncos may have made their mission crystal clear: Playoffs or Bust!
After snagging their replacement to the departed-Brandon Marshall, the Broncos made a last minute trade with the Baltimore Ravens to acquire the infamous notice to current QBs Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn that their jobs were all but secured with the team. Translation Broncos Fans: The Broncos drafted one of the greatest college quarterbacks in the history of the game, Heisman Trophy Winner and 2-Time National Champion Field General Tim Tebow from the University of Florida.
And the floodgates of hell unofficially opened late in the eyes of the ESPN experts.
For over a month, the "experts" in Bristol had Tebow as a late second, early third round pick. They talked about how his mechanics were all screwy in regards to his release. Yet, he had one of the best winningest percentages in college football, one of the best records as a starter and he won two national championships. Yet, when it came judgment day, and his name was called, everyone called the Broncos insane! Funny part is that they said the same thing about the Washington Sentinels when they used replacement players in the movie, and look how that turned out.
Granted, the former Gator has some more work to do on his mechanics, but he provides something the Broncos have been needing out of the guy under center: Thinking. Not since Plummer have the Broncos been in such a good shock. Sure, they got Orton, who has proven that he's tough after battling that bad hand most of the season. And of course they got Quinn, who was supposed to be the Golden Boy when he was drafted. But with Tebow, Josh McDaniels can start from scratch and mold him into one of the most dominant and successful quarterbacks in the league.
But everyone is picking Tebow apart as if he pulled an Ochocinco and slipped Denver a buck to pick him now.
But why? Is it because Tebow, Sam Bradford, Toby Gerhart and Jimmy Clausen were all drafted before the "Real McCoy?" Here's why Tebow was drafted 25th and not 125th. Because McDaniels believes in Tebow's work ethic more than Clausen's. Clausen spent a majority of last season flat on his back...just like McDaniels former partner in crime Charlie Weis. Seriously, if Weis had quit spoon-feeding his quarterback, then he would have had a better shot at being picked earlier.
Apparently other teams saw the flaws in both Clausen and McCoy that they wouldn't even pick them in the first round.
So why single out Tebow? Because of his unorthodox throwing motion? Because he has good wholesome values both on and off the field? Because he shows emotion (both positive and negative) during games? Wait, I know. It's because he cried during the final few minutes of the SEC Championship Game last December, isn't it?
Well, what did Sam Bradford do when he found out he was out for a few months with a broken collarbone? He cried.
What did Colt McCoy do when he got injured and watched as his team got pummeled by Alabama? He cried.
What did those Cincinnati players do when their coach Brian Kelly left for money and fame at Notre Dame? They got pissed, got drunk...and they cried. I believe they even sang "We Shall Overcome."
So what do all these have to do with Tim Tebow? Nothing...or something. But when it comes down to it, everyone needs to back off of Tim Tebow. There's a reason that he isn't afraid to show his true colors whether he's on or off the field. He's this year's Tom Brady so to speak. No one gave Brady a chance, which is why he was picked in the second round instead of the first.
And what did Brady do to show his appreciation? He owned St. Louis, Philly and Carolina...for three rings!
Tim Tebow is not your average quarterback. He's one of those rare cases that makes people stand up and take notice. It's clear that he will have scrutiny until he is given the chance to prove himself. However, if you look back at the quarterbacks not given a chance in the NFL, you will see some familiar faces that were not only successful, but the epitome of the Ultimate Underdog.
Joe Montana, Drew Brees, Terry Bradshaw, Troy Aikman, Joe Namath, Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, The Manning Brothers...
...even Broncos Legend and Hall of Famer, John Elway.
They were all told they weren't good enough to be at the NFL Level, and all of them have something that proves those "experts" wrong: A Super Bowl Ring...at least one! Coincidence? Don't think so.
In Denver and with McDaniels, Tebow has a chance to modify his technique and make himself a serious threat and possibly give the Mile High City something it has been craving for many years: A trip to the postseason. Sure, they would like a Super Bowl to come out of it...but a trip to the playoffs after so many close but no cigar moments would at least boost the morale of the city that hasn't slept since the departure of the last quarterback to give them hope.
Somewhere in Denver, a Hall of Famer smiles. Somewhere in Gainesville, a coach prepares his next Field General.
Somewhere in Bristol, Mel Kiper is realizing that he should have became an English teacher. Somewhere in America, a sports writer defends a college legend. And somewhere in Heaven...
God admits around a circle of friends that he indeed...LOVES THE GATORS!
