World Series Preview: East Coast Fireworks

October 29, 2009 by Ron Johnson | Posted under: MLB | Comments (0)

It's time! This is the main event of the 2009 Major League Baseball season. After over 180 games, it now comes down to seven games. Seven games to decide the 2009 World Champions. For one team, it's a chance to repeat history by winning back to back World Championships. For the other, it's an official chance to open up their new ballpark with a World Championship Banner.

Tonight in The Bronx, it's the defending World Champion Philadelphia Phillies taking on the New York Yankees!

Philadelphia Phillies & Their Road to Red October

The Phillies slumped into the postseason after a season ending series against the Florida Marlins. The Marlins gave it their all, but fell short of their goal once the Rockies clinched. For the Phillies, they took the fight to the team that stunned them two years ago in the NLDS. They polished off the Rox in four games before dispatching the Dodgers in five games.

Despite deja vu in the NLCS, the Phillies managed to wake up their offense and their defense at the right time. As for the pitching, Cliff Lee was phenomenal in his postseason debut, and the relief provided enough Rolaids for everybody to get the job done and move on to their second straight World Series.

New York Yankees & Their Road To Red October

The Yankees won over 100 games this season, convincingly clinched the AL East and quickly dispatched the Minnesota Twins in one of only two three game sweeps this postseason. Following the Twins series, the Yankees locked horns with a tragedy motivated Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Pasadena/Altadena team. It was a scare for Yankees fans who still had nightmares of the 2004 ALCS against Boston, but the Yankees got the job done back home to finish the ALCS in six games.

While the pitching of CC, Andy and Mariano kept things in perspective, it was the awakening of Alex Rodriguez that propelled the Yankees back to their first World Series in six years. Now with a familiar cast of characters (Jeter, Damon & Cano) leading a cast of unfamiliars (A-Rod & Teixiera), the Yankees look to hit them high, low and often.

Why The Phillies Win The Series

Pitching. Plain and simple. It was the impressive pitching from starters to the bullpen that allowed the Phillies to quiet the bats of Colorado's Bombers (Helton, Tulo, Barmes & Atkins) as well as LA's Solo Shooters (Manny & Co.). In any event, no matter how much offense the Phillies think they have, they will need their pitchers not to buckle under pressure.

There is another huge statistic for the Phillies: They have only loss one game on the road this postseason.

Why The Yankees Win The Series

Home Field Advantage. It's clear that the Yanks play better at home. Despite a few setbacks, the Yanks have yet to lose at home this postseason, and they've only lost twice on the road. The New Yankee Stadium is just as intimidating as the old one, but with a huge twist: slumping Yankees hitters seem to get a huge jolt from the hometown crowd.

C.C. can't do it all...and he might not have to.

The Chances of a Game Seven

The World Series hasn't had a Game Seven since 2003 when the Diamondbacks stunned the Yankees at home to win their first and only crown. Since then, it's been sweeps or possible nailbiters as the Cards, ChiSox, BoSox and Phillies have managed to keep Game Seven nothing more than a possibility over the last few years.

But this series could see its first Game Seven in four years mainly because of the chance of Home Run Derby. With power hitters like A-Rod and Ryan Howard, there will be enough fireworks and firepower to go around. And considering how much is at stake in regards to a certain few writers on this very site, a Game Seven is not only possible but necessary.

So who takes home the hardware?

The team that wins the first game of the Series has won 11 of the last 12 World Series Championships. Only the Cardinals are the exception to the rule as they lost Game One in 2006 to Detroit before taking the next four, including Game Five in St. Louis to win the hardware. There are many who feel that on paper, the Phillies are downright tougher, better and more prepared than the Yanks, but as we all should know by now, just because you have all of those doesn't necessarily guarantee a World Series Crown.

This series will come down to the pitching of the two teams. And what's better than that? A pitching duel almost guarantees that no one will be sitting still in this game. On top of all that, when you have several of the best long ball hitters in the game today locking horns, there's no telling what can happen.

My choice for this series is the Yankees based on the power of their hitters alone. C.C. is making good on the amount of money spent to bring him in, and tonight, he looks to show up his former Cleveland teammate Cliff Lee when the two lock up in The Bronx. The Phillies will make it a fight when they return to their own backyard, led by several greedy and hungrier fans.

Bear in mind that the Soul and Phillies delivered the City of Brotherly Love their first World Championships in over several decades. But with the Arena Football League on hiatus, the pressure is on for the Phillies to deliver against the most dangerous team in baseball.

Those aren't good odds if you're pulling for an upset.

  • Game One: Tonight @ NYY
  • Game Two: Thursday @ NYY
  • Game Three: Halloween Night @ PHI
  • Game Four: Sunday @ PHI
  • Game Five: Monday @ PHI
  • Game Six: Wednesday @ NYY
  • Game Seven: Thursday @ NYY
  • Series Result: Yankees in Seven

College Football Preview: Twists and Traps on Halloween

This weekend will start the next few weeks of trap games. From the ACC to the Big XII, Big Ten to SEC, someone is bound to have their BCS Dreams shattered this weekend. With that, here's a look at the key games of this weekend's college football action.

ACC Conference

North Carolina vs. #14 Virginia Tech (TRAP ALERT!)

The Hokies are eyeing a possible trip to the BCS Championship Game. LSU managed to clinch a berth with two losses, and the Hokies are looking to repeat history. But with one of the most underrated teams in the conference coming to town, could this be loss #3 for Virginia Tech?

#18 Miami vs. Wake Forest

The Demon Deacons want respect, but they won't get much out of it when the Canes visit them this weekend. After suffering an OT loss to Clemson last weekend, Miami looks to bounce back and continue their quest to return to the ACC Championship Game. But with two losses in the ACC already, the Canes need help and need to win the remainder of the schedule.

#11 Georgia Tech vs. Vanderbilt

There hasn't been a team that has been on a better tear in the ACC than the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. After defeating the Noles and the Hokies, they continued that dominance last week. They proved that they can win games without airing it out on every single play. Now they have an SEC pushover (sort of) in Vandy on their plate. Will it be trick or treat for the Jackets in Nashville?

Big East Conference

#20 West Virginia vs. South Florida

The Mountaineers survived a trip from UConn last weekend, winning the game by four. Now they face a South Florida team that has lost two straight and is looking for answers after talks of the Big East Championship have turned into minimal whispers. A win for the Mountaineers sets up a possible showdown with Cincinnati for the Big East Championship.

TRAP ALERT! #5 Cincinnati vs. Syracuse

Cincinnati has been good, but they have also been tested. They know that anyone in their conference can win the games when it counts. With Greg Paulus surpassing initial thoughts, the Orange could possibly make this an interesting finish. Either way, Cincy should be on upset watch, because 'Cuse is eyeing a possible derailment of their BCS Championship chances.

Rutgers vs. UConn

UConn enters its second game after the death of one of their players, and they look even more motivated to win one for their fallen Husky. Rutgers used to be a good football team...this weekend they intend to return to that status.

Big Ten Conference

Indiana vs. #7 Iowa (TRAP ALERT)

The Hawkeyes survived a trip to the Boxing Capital of the World with some good offense, good defense and perfect clock management. Now they return home to face a Hoosiers team that looks to put that first loss on Iowa's plate. Either way, if Iowa survives this trip, the stage would be set for their showdown with Ohio State in 'Da Shoe!'

Michigan vs. Illinois

The Wolverines were in a huge slump. They've lost three of their last four games, and they are not looking good. Now they face Illinois in a must win game for the Wolverines. In order to secure a winning season, they will most likely have to win out.

#12 Penn State vs. Northwestern

The Lions are eyeing a last breathing chance to get the Big Ten Championship. In order for that to happen, 1) Iowa has to lose...a lot, 2) Ohio State has to lose to Iowa and Michigan, and 3) Penn State has to win every conference game they play. It starts this weekend when they visit Northwestern (Kevin Blackistone's old stomping grounds).

Purdue vs. Wisconsin

Wisconsin is not in the Top 25 let alone the race for the Big Ten Championship. The huge losses have come back to hurt them as they need to win and have some help to increase their chances of clinching the conference.

Big XII Conference

Kansas vs. Texas Tech

The Jayhawks didn't have a lick of offense last week against an injury riddled Oklahoma team. Now they are out of the Top 25 and heading to Lubbock. The Raiders are still feeling the sting of Colt's Revenge from a few weeks ago, and they are possibly feeling still the sting of last year's dismal finish out of the Big XII Championship.

Kansas State vs. #22 Oklahoma (TRAP ALERT!)

The Wildcats have played spoiler several times for several years. Now they travel to Norman to lock it up with the Oklahoma Sooners. With Sam Bradford out for the remainder of the season, it's all up to the defense to step it up another notch and make a clean sweep of the most boring state in the country (next to Nebraska).

#3 Texas vs. #13 Oklahoma State (TRAP ALERT!)

I don't care what Fox Sports says. Texas doesn't deserve the top spot right now. The Horns can't get the job done until the second half, but I guess that's okay in their eyes. The Cowboys had a convincing win last week, and they are looking for payback after a trashy performance last season against these same Longhorns.

Mountain West Conference

Air Force vs. Colorado State

The Falcons have come close to providing upsets all season. Now they leave their nice chilly confines in Colorado Springs to travel to the chillier and colder tundra of Fort Collins to face the Rams, who love to play in this kind of weather. With a Winter Storm Alert in effect until Thursday night, who will come out of Winter Bowl '09 with a victory in their hands?

UNLV vs. #8 TCU

Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of TCU. Let's put it to bed: The TCU Horned Frogs will not be playing for the National Championship. Why? Just ask last year's possible BCS Buster Utah. TCU shouldn't take the Rebels lightly though, but if they can possibly finish the season undefeated (which they might not), they will be in a BCS Game in January.

Wyoming vs. #19 Utah (TRAP ALERT!)

The Utes look to be the toughest team in the conference, but everyone seems to continue to show the Cowboys of Wyoming no love. Why is that? Because they feel that this is a fluke. Bear in mind that Utah isn't as tough as they were last season, and the Cowboys are no longer the pushovers of the Mountain West Conference. Utah should be on upset alert in a huge way when the Cowboys visit their cozy little town surrounded by mountains.

Pac-10 Conference

Cal vs. Arizona State

While one state team is enjoying their Top 25 ranking, the other is looking to silence arguably the best running back in the country. Jahvid Best leads the Bears to the desert for a chance to tack on another win against the Sun Devils. Can Arizona State beat Best and Cal? Or will Jahvid run over and around Arizona State's defense?

Washington State vs. Notre Dame

The Cougars were a good football team one lifetime ago, but they can still play the role of upset when it counts. This weekend, they travel to South Bend to face Jimmy Clausen and the Irish. Notre Dame is still eyeing a better postseason berth than last season, and at 5-2, they have the talent and the fortitude to make it happen.

#4 USC vs. #10 Oregon (TRAP ALERT!)

The Trojans escaped their own backyard with a win over Oregon State, who has always been a thorn in their side in regards to the BCS. With everyone still jumping on the Trojan for BCS Championship bandwagon, they travel to Eugene to face the Ducks, who are undefeated in Pac-10 play and eyeing the Pac-10 Championship. If the Ducks can continue their powerful surge, they will defeat the Trojans, either via nailbiter or decimation.

Southeastern Conference

#24 Mississippi State vs. Auburn

The Bulldogs are flying under the radar. Their defense virtually owned Tim Tebow last weekend, and that same defense will look to own Auburn altogether this weekend. Halloween is all about tricks and treats, so expect State, with former Florida OC Dan Mullen as coach, to provide enough tricks for Auburn and treats for the fans watching from Starkville.

Georgia vs. #1 Florida (TRAP ALERT!)

The Gators have been looking weak the last few weeks. That potent offense is suffering from a virus that has spread towards Alabama as well. But with the Tide off this week, the Gators are in the spotlight as they host this year's "World's Largest Cocktail Party." Yes, screw you BCS. That's the name of the game, and I'm sticking with that. Don't like it? Pay me more to stop saying it. The Bulldogs are the last legitimate speed bump in the Gators' quest to become National Champions as well as undefeated.

#21 South Carolina vs. Tennessee (TRAP ALERT)

The Gamecocks have been used to rolling with the punches. They took Alabama to the limit, as did Tennessee. They look to take the fight to the Vols as the Vols are looking in that same direction. With a pair of losses on their plate so far, they need to win this one to keep pace with the Gators in the East, as well as keep their chances of a decent bowl game alive.

WWE RAW Rewind: RAW in the Fast Lane

Tonight's RAW starts out with highlights from last night's Bragging Rights and the betrayal of Big Show last night in the 7 on 7 SD vs. RAW Tag Team Match. Following the highlights, RAW goes live in Buffalo, New York. As the crowd goes wild, Jerishow makes their way down with the Bragging Rights Championship Trophy to obviously brag about their master plan.

While the duo celebrate, Joey Lagano and Kyle Busch are announced as tonight's Guest Hosts. Big Show makes it clear that despite what happened last night, he is still a proud member of RAW. Jericho then takes over and rubs it in RAW's face even more. He then tells Show that he did it because he is a man of loyalty. As Show tries to tell Jericho some huge news, Jericho thanks him for stopping the tyranny of DX.

Show continues to try to explain something, but Jericho continues to cheer himself and sell himself, but Show lets him know that he did it for him. He informs Jericho that he struck a deal with SmackDown GM Teddy Long: If SD wins, Big Show would become the #1 Contender for Undertaker's World Heavyweight Championship. The duo continue bickering when a pair of race cars make their way into the arena.

With that, Lagano and Busch make their way to the ring via Metallica's Fuel. The duo steps into the ring and turns their attention to Big Show. Kyle Busch shakes hands with Show, but Joey Lagano takes it upon himself to step to the face of the seven footer. Busch shows why he is the most hated man in NASCAR when he talks smack to the fans of Buffalo. Lagano jumps on and tells Show that he will face Triple H tonight.

Jericho tries to walk away and brag about the BR Championship. But Busch jumps in and tells Jericho that he will face former US Champion Kofi Kingston.

Unified Tag Team Champion Chris Jericho vs. Kofi Kingston

Back on the program, Jericho decides that he isn't going to fight. But back in the ring, Kofi takes the fight to Jericho with a dropkick. But thanks to some good timing, Jericho is able to stop Kofi's momentum in its tracks. Jericho follows it up with a headlock and shoulder block, but Kofi bounces back with a huge elbow followed by a Control Frenzy.

After sliding back into the ring, Kofi delivers some huge punches in the corner, but Jericho counters into a launching power bomb. He then follows it up with a springboard dropkick.

Back in the ring, Jericho has complete control over Kingston, but Jericho drops him with a clothesline. Kingston starts to fight back as we are informed that there is some retribution in the works for Big Show's double cross. Kingston jumps back up and delivers some huge lariats and clotheslines. Following the Boom Drop, Kingston almost gets caught in the Walls of Jericho.

Jericho wastes some time jawing with the fans as Kingston continues to fight back. On the top rope, the two battle with Kingston getting the advantage with a cross body. He sets up for Trouble in Paradise, but Jericho catches him again to go for that Walls of Jericho. After Kofi fights out of it, he gets caught in the Code Breaker...but manages to get his feet on the bottom rope. Jericho begins to argue with the ref and gets caught by the Trouble in Paradise as Kofi picks up some revenge of his own to win the match for RAW. But the celebration is short lived because as Kingston celebrates, he gets ambushed and dropped by the former WWE Champion Randy Orton.

Winner: Kofi Kingston

Back on RAW, Randy Orton makes it clear that the attack on Kofi tonight is just the beginning. Legacy then pops in and tells Orton that they have a gift for him: A tricked out Legend Killer NASCAR vehicle of Kyle Busch. They then tell him that they have another surprise...that involves John Cena.

In the GM's office, the GMs are shooting the breeze about this weekend's race when Jack Swagger pops in and asks for a WWE Championship match with John Cena tonight. Joey Lagano informs Kyle and Swagger that they will indeed pick Cena's next opponent tonight. But Miz comes in and makes it clear that he is the only one that deserves a WWE Championship Match. In the back, Santino and Divas Champion Melina are heading to the ring for the next match.

Back on RAW, we are informed that Sheamus has been signed and will debut on RAW...tonight!

Divas Champion Melina & Santino Marella vs. Chavo Guerrero & Jillian Hall

Santino and Chavo start the match with Santino getting the early upper hand on Chavo. But it doesn't take long for Guerrero to get control of the match. Santino gets the upper hand back before the Divas take their turn. While the Divas are battling, HBKswoggle makes his way to the ring. On the inside, Melina delivers the Paparazzi Leg Drop to pick up the victory. As they continue to celebrate, a random guy jumps in and serves HBKswoggle with papers. It is a Cease and Desist Order telling him that he can't wear anything DX anymore.

Winner: Santino and Melina

In the back, the new WWE Champion is making his way to the ring for his first appearance since the Iron Man Match at Bragging Rights.

Following a rewind of last night's Iron Man Match (which Cena won 6-5), we come back live expecting Cena to make his way down to the ring. Instead, Legacy makes their way down to the ring to make room for their surprise. Rhodes jumps on the mic and tells Cena that he will have to wait for his moment. DiBiase chimes in and makes it clear that even though Randy can't fight for the title, they can.

They then issue a challenge to Cena for a match for the WWE Championship. With that, the CHAMP IS HERE!!!! Cena steps into the ring, shaking his head at the sight of Rhodes and DiBiase. Cena then lets it be known that it was arguably one of the best matches in WWE History, hands down. He continues by saying that needed to do it because the war had to end. He then pokes fun at the duo.

The Champ goes on to say that he has earned the right to say NO MORE! He informs the two that if they want a shot, they better fall in line and work for it. He lets them know that hey haven't earned it. He then informs the two that they will have a match tonight...against the World's Strongest Playas!

Legacy vs. The World's Strongest Playas

Back on RAW, Legacy eyes to continue the punishment on MVP. Rhodes continues the pressure as the Guest Hosts watch on. Mark Henry manages to get tagged in and continues to punish Rhodes. But DiBiase helps his partner again. Both men take the fight to Henry and prevent him from tagging in Porter.

While the official is distracted, Legacy takes advantage and delivers a double dropkick. But Henry manages to toss Rhodes and tag in MVP. Porter comes in and takes the fight to DiBiase and polishes it off with the BALLIN' Leg Drop. MVP delivers a Sunset Flip, but it is thanks to Henry's clothesline that allows MVP to score the upset victory over Legacy.

After the bell, Randy Orton makes his way out to the ring. Orton gets into the ring and directs his message to Busch and Lagano. Orton decides to ignore the stipulations of last night's match and tells them that he will invoke his rematch clause. But Kofi Kingston comes onto the screen and tells him that no one cares what he thinks. And after revealing that he has found Orton's new ride, he decides to show how durable his car is.

He begins denting and defacing the car before tearing the car apart piece by piece. But it goes from bad to worse as Randy watches as Kofi throws red paint on the hood of Orton's car to finish the decimation of the Legend Killer.

Winner: The World's Strongest Playas...and Kofi Kingston

Evan Bourne vs. United States Champion The Miz

The Miz starts out being one step ahead of the high flyer with a series of suplexes and cheap shots. He then locks in a butterfly crab. But Bourne bounces back and delivers the knees to the face of The Miz. He then starts using those kicks before delivering the head scissors.

Miz backs him into a corner as Jack Swagger makes his way down to ringside. Miz has control of the match when Swagger grabs the stick and lets him know that no one is watching him. Miz then jumps out of the ring to confront Swagger when Bourne flies over the top and drops both men. The ref then reaches the count of ten as Bourne jumps into the ring before the ten count. Bourne wins via countout as Miz fumes over the distraction of Swagger.

Winner: Evan Bourne via countout

Back on RAW, we are informed that RAW gets a little more rock in their diet as next week's hosts for RAW will be...wait for it...wait for it...OZZY AND SHARON OSBOURNE!!

Jamie Noble vs. Sheamus

The Guest Hosts inform young Jamie Noble that tonight that he will face the Pasty Celtic Warrior in his debut tonight after spending months on ECW. He makes an immediate impact by delivering shoulder block so fierce that it sends him out of the ring. After sending him into the steps, the fight returns to the ring where Sheamus delivers a pair of elbows. He then applies a backbreaker before tossing him into the corner.

But the Irishman is unphased as he delivers a trifecta of knee lifts. After delivering a pair of backbreakers, he delivers a huge bicycle kick that gives him the victory in his debut on RAW.

Winner: Sheamus

In the back, DX makes their way to the ring for Triple H's match with the Big Show.

RAW Main Event

Triple H vs. Big Show

Before the bell, the GMs have one final surprise for Big Show: Every member of the RAW Roster is on their way down to surprise the Show for some payback. Shawn then informs Big Show that this is a No-DQ Lumberjack Match with a special referee: WWE Champion John Cena!!!

Show is then sent over the top and introduced to the Lumberjacks brutally as RAW goes to its final commercial break.

Back on RAW, Triple H has a sleeper applied to Big Show as the RAW Roster and John Cena look on. Big Show bounces back by using his weight to his advantage and delivering a huge spear in the process. Show begins to gain confidence by taunting DX member Shawn Michaels. Triple H tries to fight back but is quickly dropped again with a Sidewalk Slam. AFter a two-count, Show applies a claw on the shoulder area of Triple H.

He then delivers a huge series of headbutts before receiving a DX Chop. Chris Masters gets involved and is knocked out for his troubles, but this allows Triple H to recover and take the fight to Show. He counters a chokeslam into a DDT, but is launched off the pinfall by Big Show. Triple H tries for The Pedigree, but Show drops him with a shoulder/back toss. Show goes up top to deliver a Show Splash. Cena goes for the three count, but injures himself (not really).

Show goes into his face, but gets ambushed by the RAW Roster. Following an Attitude Adjustment from Cena, DX delivers Sweet Chin Music and the Pedigree as RAW gets revenge on Big Show's betrayal. After the bell, the Guest Hosts make their way out to make the blockbuster announcement about Cena's opponent for Survivor Series.

They come out and make it clear that they couldn't make a decision until Hornswoggle comes out to simplify it: John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series!! All three men look on in shock as RAW goes off the air.

Remember: Next Week on RAW, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne bring their own brand of Hard Justice as they will Guest Host RAW!!

College Football Roundup: Pride Comes Before A Fall

October 25, 2009 by Ron Johnson | Posted under: NCAA-FB | Comments (0)

Yesterday's games provided enough entertainment for everybody. From overtime thrillers to gut check moments, there was plenty of thrills to fill that empty void that baseball fans had as Game Six of the ALCS was postponed until today. So how did the conferences do yesterday?

Let's take a look.

ACC Conference

Florida State 30, North Carolina 27

After being dealt a severe blow last week against Georgia Tech, the Seminoles bounced back in full force to stave off a late rally from the Tar Heels to defeat them in Chapel Hill. Even if the 'Noles don't make it to the postseason, they will send Bobby Bowden out a winner in the event that this is his final season as the head of the Florida State Empire.

#11 Georgia Tech 34, Virginia 9

The Yellow Jackets had no legitimate passing game on Saturday, but they didn't even need it. After dishing out an 18-play, 82 yard drive that lasted almost 11 minutes, the Jackets used that dangerous ground game to pile up 362 yards and polishing off their Virginia road trip with a pair of victories over the Hokies and Cavaliers. Now they stand alone as the powerhouse and team to beat in the ACC.

Notre Dame 20, Boston College 16

The Eagles have owned the Irish the last six times they played each other. But on a muggy night in South Bend, the Irish managed to break the skid and stave off constant aerial assaults from Dave Shinskie to record their first victory in six tries over Boston College and improve to 5-2 on the season. Either way, the Irish are looking better than they did last season.

Clemson 40, #8 Miami 37 OT

Miami just needed to finish with that one loss in the conference to have a chance to win the ACC. They needed to win every game for the remainder of the season to have a chance to bounce above USC and Texas for a BCS Berth. But in their own backyard, they got stunned by the underrated Clemson Tigers. The Tigers rallied in the final minute of the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it to overtime. In overtime, following a Miami field goal, the Tigers marched down and used a quick slant to pull off the biggest upset of the season for them.

Big East Conference

#20 Pitt 41, South Florida 14

The Panthers stepped up at the right time to get the job done and remain one step closer to the Big East Championship Game. For South Florida, things are going from bad to worse as they continue to drop out of the BCS picture. After a pair of huge losses, the Bulls no longer have that swagger they had last season or earlier this season.

#22 West Virginia 28, UConn 24

In their first game back since the death of Jasper Howard, the UConn Huskies almost delivered a huge upset in Black Mountain. After getting a ton of respect from the Mountaineers, they delivered a nail biter but was unable to get the victory. Either way, Howard was smiling at the sight of his team playing their hearts out.

#5 Cincinnati 41, Louisville 10

With Tony Pike out for this game after surgery on his non-throwing forearm, the Bearcats looked like they could be walking into a trap game against the Cardinals of Louisville. But Zach Collaros stepped up in his first start this season throwing for 253 yards and three touchdowns (all while only throwing a pair of incompletions) to lead the Bearcats to a straight up beat down of Louisville.

Big Ten Conference

#18 Ohio State 38, Minnesota 7

The Buckeyes showed that momentum is on their side as they proved that change is good. Terrelle Pryor threw for a pair of touchdowns on top of running for another one as he led Ohio State to a massive rout over the Gophers in 'Da Shoe. Now they look forward to the arrival of the most surprising team in the Big Ten, the Iowa Hawkeyes in a couple of weeks.

#13 Penn State 35, Michigan 10

The Wolverines started out with huge fire to open the season up undefeated. But they have officially fallen off the radar of the Big Ten Championship as they lost their second straight game. The Lions dominated from the start, and after falling 7-0 early, they showed that they have enough offense and defense to make one last run at the title.

#7 Iowa 15, Michigan State 13

Can anyone stop the Hawkeyes? Seriously, is there any team in the Big Ten that can stop them from winning the Big Ten Championship? Even if they lose one game this season, the Hawkeyes are on the outside looking in...at least for another few hours. While everyone talks about the Gators, Tide and Horns, the Hawkeyes have quietly moved their way possibly into the Top 5 of the Top 25.

Big XII Conference

#14 Oklahoma State 34, Baylor 7

The Cowboys didn't have their star runner or receiver once again. But for Zac Robinson, that was no problem as he threw for 250 yards and three scores to lead the Cowboys to their fifth straight victory and remain undefeated in Big XII Conference play. But with Texas and Oklahoma on the horizon, will the Cowboys have enough to hold off Colt McCoy's quest for the Heisman and the National Championship?

#25 Oklahoma 35, #24 Kansas 13

No Sam Bradford? No problem. Landry Jones showed that he can win under pressure as he outshined Todd Reesing with a pair of touchdowns. And defensive wise, the Sooners took the fight to the Jayhawks with several interceptions, one returned to the house. Now if only they played like this to start the season...

Texas A&M 52, #21 Texas Tech 30

The Red Raiders have officially met their trap game. After losing a heartbreaker in Austin to the Horns, the Raiders made it 0-2 against their fellow Texas teams as the Aggies delivered an onslaught of punishment to the fans in Lubbock.

#3 Texas 41, Missouri 7

The Horns didn't look like the same team that struggled against the likes of Colorado a few weeks ago. They rolled into Colombia and decimated the once dangerous Missouri Tigers. The Tigers' offense never got off the ground as they were flat out overmatched by the Colt "Real" McCoy. Now with a pair of victories over Oklahoma and Missouri, the Horns now turn their attention to a Halloween Scare-tacular against Oklahoma State.

Mountain West Conference

#19 Utah 23, Air Force 16 OT

The Utes needed overtime to defeat the Air Force Falcons. Let me say that again: The Utah Utes, the team that decimated every team they face last season including Alabama, needed overtime to defeat the Air Force Falcons. If the Utes were out to prove that they are ready to play for a National Championship, they didn't last night.

#8 TCU 38, #26 BYU 7

A pair of huge victories have allowed the Horned Frogs to remain atop the Mountain West Conference. But is this for real? How is that TCU and Utah are the only MWC teams ranked? Where's the love for Wyoming? Seriously.

Pac 10 Conference

#10 Oregon 43, Washington 19

The Ducks knew that playing Washington would be a trap game. That's probably why they played like their Pac 10 future depended on it. With their defense dropping the offense and special teams providing the necessary jolt, the Ducks have shown that even without Blount in the backfield, they can still win. And right now, they are eyeing the Pac 10 Championship. And if they silence Pete Carroll next weekend, they will most likely have it.

#4 USC 42, Oregon State 36

The Trojans are not as good as advertised. The Beavers were their usual selves as they provided enough worry for the Trojans last night. In the end, the Trojans got the victory, but the price they paid for this one may come back to haunt them as they leave their cushy LA home to travel to Eugene to face the Ducks with the Pac 10 Championship most likely on the line. A loss means that the Trojans won't have much of a chance to clinch it.

#23 Arizona 27, UCLA 13

Where the blue hell did Arizona come from? Pushing their basketball program aside, the Wildcats made good on their first appearance in the Top 25 with a convincing win over conference rival UCLA. Led by Nick Foles, the Wildcats will most likely remain in the rankings when their released this afternoon.

SEC Conference

#24 Ole Miss 30, Arkansas 17

The Rebels have made their way back to the Top 25. And they even managed to do what Auburn and Florida could not: Beat Arkansas convincingly. Despite having a 2-2 record in conference play, the Rebels still look like a possible threat to both LSU and Alabama's quest for the BCS. And they just so happen to play LSU in a few weeks at home.

#9 LSU 31, Auburn 10

The Bayou Bengals are not going down without a fight in the SEC West. With Alabama on the horizon, the Tigers bounced back from that stunning loss to Florida to pick up a convincingly defensive victory over the Georgia Tigers.

#2 Alabama 12, Tennessee 10

It was told to me last week that the Tide will be #1 for a long time. It was said that Florida almost losing to Arkansas was pretty bad in itself. Having said that, the Tide welcomed Tennessee into town...and almost suffered a severe setback. The Vols have an identical record with the Hogs, and if the field goal wasn't blocked, the Tide would have lost that game last night. Yeah, it's official: Alabama will not be #1 when the polls come out this afternoon.

#1 Florida 29, Mississippi State 19

Despite a pair of passes picked off and returned for touchdowns, the Florida Gators managed to survive their trip to Starkville and pick a 10 point victory. It's clear that Tim Tebow could not handle the unbelieveable pressure by the Bulldog defense. But the biggest shocker of the night was at the end when Dan Mullen didn't use his final timeout with :24 left on the clock to give his team a fighting chance to upset the Gators. If the Gators are looking to make a second straight trip to the National Championship, they will have to resurrect that familiar style of smashmouth football that helped them defeat both Oklahoma and Ohio State to win the crowns.

Tonight’s TNA broadcast opens up the show with Kurt Angle looking like all business. He comes out to discuss the past, present and future of the Main Event Mafia. He then focuses on the man he faced this past Sunday at Bound For Glory. He praises Eric Young, TNA World Champion AJ Styles and even Matt Morgan. He then lets the Young Guns know that he has nothing to prove to them and that he is ready to fight their fight.

But all of a sudden, Rhino comes down to the ring to confront Angle. Rhino tells him that the Main Event Mafia is no more. He then tries to tell Kurt that TNA is just trying to send the old school guys packing and make room for guys like Morgan, Hernandez and Styles. Rhino continues his tirade as Team 3D tries to make their way down to the ring to confront the War Machine.

Rhino decides to turn his attention to Team 3D to talk them into joining his cause. Brother Ray finally makes his way to the ring, but he is cut off by Kurt Angle as Rhino makes a quick and loud escape.

In the back, Styles makes it clear that if Angle’s comments were true, then he has taken a huge step for the better. Afterwards, we are informed that Samoa Joe, Daniels and Styles will renew their old rivalry and add a chapter to their storied past at Turning Point as the three square off for the TNA World Championship.

Raisha Saeed returns to let it be known that she is the puppet master of Awesome Kong. She also warns Kong not to compete against her tonight.

As Tenay and Tazz give the rundown of tonight’s broadcast, Homicide and Amazing Red are slugging it out back and forth before their scheduled match.

Amazing Red vs. Homicide

As the two slug it out back and forth, Don West makes his way down to cheer on his money man. After a pair of roll up attempts, Amazing Red gets control of the match. He then dishes out the Red Dawn Powerbomb but is only able to get a two-count. Homicide gets control back as he drops Red on his head with a Gringo Slam before delivering the Gringo Killer to pick up the upset win over the X Division Champion.

Winner: Homicide

In the back, Scott Steiner makes it clear that the Mafia is alive and well. And he plans to prove that tonight against The Blueprint.

“The Blueprint” Matt Morgan vs. Scott Steiner

Before the bell, Steiner tries to put the moves on Krystal Lashley, the wife of “The Boss” Bobby Lashley. Steiner is being overmatched by Morgan to start the match. After a set of elbows in the corner, Morgan gets suckered in the corner. Steiner delivers a belly to belly followed by The Steiner Line and a little more showing off for Mrs. Lashley.

But Morgan starts firing back with a pair of clotheslines followed by a huge splash and clothesline. On the outside, Steiner gets control before he decides to put more moves on Krystal Lashley. But The Boss comes down and gets a measure of revenge before taking out Steiner. Morgan recovers and nails The Carbon Footprint to pick up the win over Big Poppa Pump.

Winner: “The Blueprint” Matt Morgan

Samoa Joe & Kevin Nash vs. Daniels & TNA World Champion AJ Styles

The battle doesn’t take long to escalate as all four men start beating the holy hell out of each other. Styles and Daniels have the advantage until the cheap tactics begin. Joe shows that he is not worried about either man as he regains control before tagging in Kevin Nash. Nash comes in and delivers his own punishment on the TNA Champion.

The four start fighting again with Styles taking out Samoa Joe. Nash delivers a huge chokeslam on Daniels to pick up the win. But Nash is focused on getting his hands on Eric Young. Young pops on and tells Nash that if he wants him, come and get him.

Winner: Kevin Nash and Samoa Joe

Awesome Kong vs. Raisha Saeed

Kong shows complete dominance leading up to the Implant Buster for the victory. But after the bell, Kong decides to further punish her former handler. She delivers a huge Awesome Bomb that sends her through the entrance stage.

Winner: Awesome Kong

Rhino vs. Hernandez

Hernandez takes the fight to Rhino by launching him over the top rope before landing a splash on the outside. But back in the ring, the War Machine gets control of the match before focusing on the neck of Super Mex. Hernandez gets control and nails the Mexi Splash to pick up the victory over Rhino. But after the bell, Rhino snaps and attacks Hernandez. But Super Mex bounces back, and as he prepares to hit the Gringo Bomb, Team 3D jumps in and blocks him from executing the finish.

Winner: Hernandez

In the back, Angle gets jumped by a new face in TNA.

#1 Contender’s Match for the TNA World Tag Team Championship

Motor City Machine Guns vs. Lethal Consequences

The two X Division tag teams show why they’re two of the greatest. From inside the ring to outside, the two lock horns on the top rope. Machismo and Sabin battle at the top of the cables. Sabin delivers a Tornado DDT to Lethal. The Consequences nail the Creed Combination.

But the Guns fight back with The Shootout before climbing to the top. But Lethal jumps in and nails the Lethal Combination on Sabin. The fight is brutal, but in the end, Sabin is the one holding the ‘X,’ guaranteeing that the duo will face either The British Invasion or Beer Money for the TNA World Tag Team Titles at Turning Point.

Winner: Motor City Machine Guns

Six Sides of Steel Match for the TNA World Tag Team Championships

The British Invasion vs. Beer Money, Inc.

The Invasion has control as the match begins. Both men focus on the injured ribs/lower back area of Robert Roode. Constant tags allow the Infestation to continue the assault. But Roode manages to break the momentum by launching Magnus into the steel and delivering the Spinebuster. Roode is able to tag in James Storm, who comes in and unleashes hell on the duo.

Beer Money bounces back with a set of double team moves to keep the Invasion at bay. At the top of the cage, both teams hit an arsenal of moves: A Powerbomb/Electric Chair/Superplex from the top of the cage.

Doug Williams knocks out the referee to prevent Beer Money from winning after the DWI. The Invasion manages to keep a hold of the Tag Team Championships.

Winner: The British Invasion

In the back, AJ Styles is leaving the arena when he gets attacked by a mystery man. But on the program, Kurt Angle is heading to the ring to face the man who attacked him earlier in the MEM Locker Room.

Desmond Wolf comes out and tries to pick up where he left off, but Angle shows why he is the best in the world. But thanks to a low blow, Wolf gets the advantage and takes the fight to the top of the remaining pieces of six sides of steel. Wolf prepares to deliver the guillotine to Angle, but instead he wants Angle to remember who the hell he is. With that, he introduces himself as Desmond Wolf before throwing on his jacket and walking away with iMPACT comes to an end.

ECW Extreme Hangover: Welcome to ECW, Chris Jericho!

Before the show opens, Abraham Washington is promoting his talk show when Chris Jericho makes his way past him and demands to know where the GM’s office is. What is Jericho’s reasoning for being on ECW tonight?

ECW opens up at the University of South Carolina with the arrival of Yoshi Tatsu.

Yoshi Tatsu vs. Zack Ryder (#1 Contender’s Match for the ECW Championship)

Ryder shows his cockiness right off the bat by attempting to punk Tatsu. But Tatsu shows why he is just as dangerous as Ryder. Ryder tries to get the advantage, but Tatsu maintains focus and uses his speed and agility to keep Ryder at bay. But thanks to the ropes, Ryder gets complete control over his opponent.

Ryder takes the fight to the ground with the leg scissors. Ryder tries to continue the pressure, but the Japanese sensation recovers and takes the fight to Mr. Woo Woo. Yoshi uses his legs and his knees to continue the pressure on Ryder. Tatsu climbs up top, but his hesitation costs him as Ryder heads him off at the past. Both men slug it out on the top of the corner, until both are sent down to the floor below.

Back in the ring, Ryder has managed to regain the control. He has a reverse arm breaker applied as the crowd tries to will Yoshi along. Tatsu uses his legs to slow down Ryder’s momentum…did I mention he was on the ground when this was going on? After a slingshot, Yoshi delivers the Rising Sun Express and goes for a pinfall. After several roll ups, Yoshi goes for the Grand Finale, but Ryder cuts him off.

Both men slug it out on the ropes, but Tatsu manages to nail the Jap Splash to get the pinfall victory and earn a shot at Christian and the ECW Championship.

Winner and New #1 Contender for ECW Championship: Yoshi Tatsu

In Tiffany’s office, Rosa Mendes is trying to sell herself up to the GM of ECW when Jericho makes his way into the office. Jericho comes in and tells Tiffany that he is here to scout ECW Talent to add to Team SmackDown. But Tiffany makes it clear that Jericho will not be adding anyone from the ECW Roster to join Team SmackDown for one night.

Disgruntled, Jericho runs into the International Incident and makes a deal with William Regal for his boys’ services. But Tiffany comes in and reminds Regal that as long as he challenges her authority, he will not get another shot at the ECW Championship. After a tirade from Jericho, Tiffany then books him in a match tonight…against the ECW Champion, Christian.

Sheamus vs. JT Quinn

The Pasty Scotsman doesn’t even look intimidated by his opponent as he rams him into the corner. Following a high knee, Sheamus delivers a huge boot to the skull…but he decides not to complete the pinfall. He then picks up poor Mr. Quinn and delivers the Irish Curse. But as he prepares for another Curse, Shelton Benjamin jumps in and spears the Irishman not once but twice before delivering a huge German Suplex.

Winner: Sheamus via Disqualification

Interlude: Paul Burchill and Katie Lea Burchill

The brother comes out and focuses his verbal attacks on The Hurricane. After countless moments of bragging, Burchill calls out Gregory Helms to reveal that he is indeed the Hurricane. With that, The Hurricane makes his way down to the ring to confront the Burchills. He then demands the mask, but when the mask is revealed, it is not Hurricane. With that, the music hits again, and the real Hurricane comes out and drops Paul Burchill with a Singapore Cane.

ECW Main Event

WWE Unified Tag Team Champion Chris Jericho vs. ECW Champion Christian

The two former Tag Team Champions lock horns with Christian getting early control with an armbar. Jericho uses a cheap tactic to get control of the fight. After a huge clothesline, Jericho gets launched out of the ring with a huge clothesline.

Back in the ring, Christian takes the fight to the ground, but the fight returns to their feet as Christian delivers a huge dropkick. But Jericho launches Christian to the outside. On the outside, Jericho rams the ECW Champion into the barricade.

Back in the ring, Jericho has a rear naked choke applied, but Christian starts showing some life. Jericho takes a moment to showboat, but it bites him in the ass as he misses the Lionsault.

Christian begins to take the fight to his former friend and tag partner, but Jericho aims for the Walls. Christian counters into a small package but is only able to get a two count. Jericho nails the Enzugiri, but he also gets just a two count. Jericho is able to lock in the Walls of Jericho, but Christian manages to reach the ropes.

As Jericho argues with the ref, Christian takes advantage and nails the Killswitch to pick up the win and send Jericho back to SmackDown with the loss.

The ECW Champion celebrates with his peeps as he finds out that next week, he will face Yoshi Tatsu for the ECW Championship on Syfy. Christian salutes his Peepulation as ECW on Syfy goes off the air.

WWE RAW Rewind: Dogg Pizzle Invades WWE Televizzle

Tonight's broadcast opens in Jacksonville with the arrival of tonight's Guest Host: Snoop Dogg. Snoop enters the arena in a Pink Cadillac with the Bella Twins and Eve Torres in tow. The Guest Host has arrived in the Hizzle and makes it clear that this Sunday night, RAW will embarrass SmackDown!

He then adds a pair of matches: Randy Orton vs. Ted DiBiase and Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels in a preview of this Sunday's huge 14-Man Tag Match! With that, DX makes their way to the ring.

DX decides to try to talk in Snoop's native tongue. After a little fun with Snoop's language, they focus on the Bragging Rights Main Event. After poking fun at the members of Team SmackDown, they introduce Team RAW, which has the remaining five guys heading down to the ring.

Cody Rhodes grabs the mic and makes it clear that he just might beat SmackDown all by himself. This prompts the Big Show to grab the stick and informs Cody that he will respect him, and if he lets this team down, he will take them down himself...as well as everyone else. Mark Henry jumps on and tells him that if that's a threat, there will be a problem.

Swagger chimes in and says that he's miles ahead of either Henry and Show. Kofi jumps on and tries to bring the team back together. Shawn chimes in and informs the remaining five members that they have a tag team match, and whoever loses will be replaced by the victor. And that match is...now!

Team RAW (Big Show, Mark Henry, Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger & Cody Rhodes) vs. Team RAW Replacements (MVP, Primo, Evan Bourne, Chavo & Chris Masters) (Winner: Team RAW)

Back on RAW, Chavo has control until Cody comes in and gets brief control. But Rhodes has already proven that he will not tag in any of his partners. Because of that choice, Primo has complete control, until he gets caught by the Cross Rhodes. But Swagger tags himself in and gets teh pin to pick up the win for Team RAW. After the bell, the five men break down and fight each other. As Team Captains DX look on, they know that they have a huge fight on their hands if SmackDown is on a better page than them.

After the footage from last week's main event, Ted DiBiase comes on the screen and makes it clear that he didn't do anything that Randy wouldn't have done. As he explains his side, the WWE Champion comes in and advises DiBiase that he will not fight back. He will show him the respect that he deserves...or he is out of Legacy. He then tells him that if he fights back, he will regret it for the rest of his life.

Ted DiBiase vs. WWE Champion Randy Orton (Winner: Randy Orton)

Orton starts out by kicking Ted in the gut before stalking his prey even more. Orton continues his "punishment," but Ted starts to look a little under pressure. While taunting and goading Ted to hit him, Orton continues to stomp him. Ted finally gets to his feet and continues to lock eyes with his mentor. After a set of pie faces, Ted finally pushes back, sending Orton into tthe corner.

Orton gets back on his feet, btu DiBiase again is hesitant to throw the punch. Orton then lifts DiBiase up via his chin and delivers the RKO to pick up the easy win.

Following the match, Cole and King take a look back at the life and career of Captain Lou Albano.

Back in Jacksonville, Snoop is entertaining RAW's newest Divas when Hornswoggle and Chavo come in to continue their feud with each other. But then Jillian and Santino Brown come in to make things even more interesting until Snoop throws them out. All of a sudden, the show has some "technical difficulties" as Snoop takes himself a brief break. After the TD, Snoop unveils his candles as Santino Brown returns to enjoy the smell. In the back, John Cena takes one last look around the RAW locker room as this could be his final night on RAW.

Bonus: Go grab Batista's new DVD, I Walk Alone, in stores tomorrow!

Cena's Last RAW Stand?

John Cena vs. Triple H (Winner: Triple H)

As the bell rings, both men show that they are not going to hold anything back. Cena aims for the Attitude Adjustment, but Triple H manages to wiggle out of it before the finale. Both men manage to dish out counter after counter as they try to get control of the bout. Triple H finally gets control of the match as he goes for the Pedigree. But Cena blocks the finish and sends The Game to the outside.

Back in the ring, Triple H gets the advantage after launching Cena into the announcers table. He then begins to focus on the lower back of the Doctor of Thuganomics. Both men begin to exchange shots back and forth with Triple H getting control. Cena tries for the Adjustment again, but Triple H counters and hits the chop block.

Cena suckers Triple H in and goes for the STFU. Both men continue to punish each other, but Cena nails the Fisherman's Suplex. But The Game gets control as he goes for the Pedigree, but Cena counters it into the STF and locks it in this time. Triple H fights out of it and nails the Pedigree, but Cena manages to get his foot on the bottom rope.

Back on the program, Triple H continues the punishment in the ring after delivering it on the outside. He blocks the Adjustment again and locks in the Sharpshooter. Cena reaches the ropes and takes the fight with a Beantown Spinner and the 5-Knuckle Shuffle. CEna again goes for the Attitude Adjustment, but The GAme counters again with the Harley Race High Knee, the Facebuster and a clothesline.

Following a spinebuster, Triple H primes for another Pedigree. He nails it again, but Cena somehow kicks out of the Pedigree! As Triple H preps for another Pedigree, Cena counters again and delivers the Attitude Adjustment...but the Game Kicks out! Cena aims for the Boston Leg Drop. Both men counter each other's finishers, until Triple H nails the Pedigree for a third time and picks up the win over John Cena in possibly Cena's final match on RAW.

After the bell, Triple H helps Cena up and shakes his hand before leaving the ring. Cena stands in the ring alone and looks around at the WWE Universe. After saluting the crowd possibly for the last time, Cena walks up the ramp to Cena chants.

After a rewind from last Friday night's live Dirt Sheet, the United States Champion makes his way to the ring.

The Miz vs. Marty Janetty (Winner: The Miz)

Before his opponent is announced, Snoop comes on the screen and informs Miz that because of his insults towards Janetty, he has to face the former Rocker tonight. With that, Janetty slaps the taste out of the mouth of the Miz. Miz starts to gain the advantage, but Janetty shows why he is one of the best wrestlers of the yesteryear.

Following a diving fist, Janetty continues to take the fight to Miz, but launches him into the ropes before delivering the Skull Crushing Finale to pick up the win.

Before the bell, we are informed that the Divas will also have a Bragging Rights match this Sunday as Divas Champion Melina, Gail Kim and Kelly Kelly will face Women's Champion Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix and Natalya. But if Jillian wins tonight, she will take Melina's spot on Team RAW Divas.

Divas Championship

Jillian vs. Melina (Winner: Melina)

Despite constant interference from Chavo, Melina is able to get control and nail the Spotlight Leg Drop to pick up the win and retain the championship. But Chavo jumps in and attacks Snoopswoggle before the Guest Host arrives and drops Chavo with a huge clothesline. With that, the fight is on.

Chavo vs. Snoop Dogg (Winner: Snoop Dogg)

After both men dance around each other, Snoop levels Chavo with a huge Spear to pick up the win. After the bell, the Divas of Team RAW make their way into the ring, and alongside Snoopswoggle, dance it up in the ring.

Following a recap of arguably the greatest rivalry in WWE history in reent memory, Cole and King give the rundown of this Sunday's Bragging Rights. In the back, Team SmackDown's co-captain Christina Jericho makes his way to the ring...and I bet he is not coming alone.

RAW's Main Event

SD Co-Captain Chris Jericho vs. RAW Co-Captain Shawn Michaels (No Contest)

Before the match, Jericho grabs a mic and talks some smack to RAW's Co-Captains. He then introduces Team SmackDown...who make their way to the ring along to prepare to punish Michaels. As Jericho begins to talk again, Triple H makes his way down...with the members of Team RAW right behind him.

All 14 men square off in teh ring in a huge stare down contest before the War of Words begin again. Despite the earlier fireworks, the team has united with a common goal: To shut Jericho up. But now, Vickie Guerrero comes out and stops the fight from happening. She then orders Team SmackDown to leave the arena.

Triple H makes it clear that even though Vickie told SmackDown to leave, they don't work ofr Vickie Guerrero as a full blown riot ensues between Team RAW and Team SmackDown with RAW going off the air.

Don't forget that this Friday night on SmackDown: Jerry "The King" Lawler reunites with his old broadcast colleague, Jim Ross to further pump up this Sunday's Bragging Rights Pay Per View. The Undertaker faces CM Punk in a Submission Match for the World Heavyweight Championship...with Scott Armstrong as the same official from Breaking Point and Teddy Long at ringside.

Plus: Just confirmed moments ago, Team RAW is planning to invade SmackDown this Friday night for one last ounce of payback before Bragging Rights!

2009 MLB League Championship Series Preview

October 14, 2009 by Ron Johnson | Posted under: MLB | Comments (0)

, , , , , , , , ,

If anyone wanted a reason to sleep, we have found it. It's Deja Vu all over again as we get a repeat in one bracket, while we get a monumental showdown in another. I haven't found a reason to watch the League Championship Series yet, but maybe someone will give me a reason after this one.

Matt Kemp #27 of the Los Angeles Dodgers is safe at third base after hitting a triple in the first inning against Eric Bruntlett #4 of the Philadelphia Phillies at Dodger Stadium on August 12, 2008 in Los Angeles, California.

National League Championship Series

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

It's the rematch of last year's 2008 NLCS. This means that either it will be the same song and dance of last year's series, or we may actually see some fireworks come out of it. Last year, the Phils quietly made their way into the World Series with a dominating performance over Joe Torre's Dodgers last year.

Now we have to go through it all over again. Some new players and some old faces in this showdown.

The Dodgers stepped up at the right moment by taking the last two of three from the Rockies to end the season and sweeping the Cardinals in the NLDS to make it back to the show that has denied them the right to play for the World Series Championship.

For the Phillies, they slumped into the postseason, but they did survive an onslaught from the hottest team in the National League as they won in four games against the Colorado Rockies. Cliff Lee was spectacular in his postseason debut, and the offense did enough to stave off the late rallies of the Rox.

So as I have another cup of coffee just writing this thing, I wonder what will happen when these two familiar teams meet up this weekend in Dodger Stadium in The City of Angels.

  • Game One: @ LAD 10/15
  • Game Two: @ LAD 10/16
  • Game Three: @ PHI 10/18
  • Game Four: @ PHI 10/19
  • Game Five*: @ PHI 10/21
  • Game Six*: @ LAD 10/23
  • Game Seven*: @ LAD 10/24
  • Series Result: Dodgers In Six

Alex Rodriguez #13 of the New York Yankees strikes out with runners in scoring position as catcher Jeff Mathis #5 of he Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim throws the ball back to the pitcher in the first inning on September 21, 2009 in Anaheim, California.

American League Championship Series

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs. New York Yankees

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been riding a wave of confidence ever since the passing of Nick Adenhart. They have become the Hokies of the West Coast by turning tragedy into triumph. Because of this, the Angels managed to do something they couldn't do in the past two years: They defeated the Boston Red Sox...more like they swept the Sox.

On the other side of the ball, you have the New York Yankees. They were considered the hottest team in baseball with over 100 wins this season and used the bats to destroy the Twins' hopes of making their own version of Rocktober. Now led by the bats of A-Rod and Mark Texiera, the Yankees look to their big pitchers to keep the Angels at bay and keep the team on the winning track en route to another World Series appearance.

If you're looking for excitement, look no further than this ALCS Series. The Angels, led by the Spirit of Adenhart, face the Yankees, led by the new and improved Bronx Bombers. The prize? An American League Championship and a trip to the World Series. One way or the other, we will see a new American League Champion lock horns with either the Dodgers or Phillies.

Okay. Now I have a reason to watch the LCS...but it's not for the National League. It's for the American League.

  • Game One: @ NYY 10/16
  • Game Two: @ NYY 10/17
  • Game Three: @ LAA 10/19
  • Game Four: @ LAA 10/20
  • Game Five*: @ LAA 10/22
  • Game Six*: @ NYY 10/24
  • Game Seven*: @ NYY 10/25
  • Series Result: Yankees In Seven

NFL Week Six Preview: Do You Like Surprises?

October 14, 2009 by Ron Johnson | Posted under: NFL | Comments (1)

, ,

So the bosses want their contributors to be more active among the site, huh? Okay, you guys are on! After countless pieces with college football and pro wrestling, I'm switching gears for a moment and focusing on pro football. Despite my team beyond the epitome of stinking, I will dish out some pro knowledge.

And all I have to say is: Do any of you like surprises?

Houston Texans (2-3) at Cincinnati Bengals (4-1)

Two of the NFL's most pushed over teams look to continue their climb to the top of their respective division. The Texans are actually better than they look. With the return of quarterback Matt Schaub, Houston could be looking past 8-8 and more at 9-7 or 10-6.

On the other side of the ball, you have the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals have to be the surprise team of the season considering they are in the toughest division in the AFC: The North. The Bengals have been blacked out in their own area practically all season. The result: A 4-1 record and sitting atop the AFC North. They like the thought of being blacked out from this standpoint.

I wouldn't expect an upset from this game with the way Carson Palmer played last week against Baltimore. But then again, anything is possible.

UPSET ALERT!

Detroit Lions (1-4) at Green Bay Packers (2-2)

The Lions have lost two straight after winning their first game in over a year. But those losses have been by inches instead of miles. If the Lions can get healthy again, they could easily have two wins before the season is over.

Then there's the Green Bay Packers. This team used to run the AFC Central/North even after Favre hung up the pads the first time. Now they're one game better than Detroit with division foes Minnesota and Chicago running the entire division from atop. For Aaron Rodgers, you would think that this would be an easy win for him in his own backyard.

However, the Bengals went into Lambeau and won...and the Lions have proven that they have the tools to clinch a victory. Can they win in Lambeau? You never know...

UPSET ALERT!

St. Louis Rams (0-5) at Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3)

The St. Louis Rams are in a state of emergency. This is so bad, that their only possible savior is...Rush Limbaugh?! Okay. Even I have to step in and say that this is gone on long enough. The Rams need a victory, and they need it now! With that said, the Rams travel to South Florida to face an injury riddled Jaguars team.

The Jags got shut down completely when they visited Seattle. When I say they got shut down completely, I mean they got served by a Seahawks team that isn't really that good. The offense never got off the ground, the defense was decimated and everything that could go wrong for the Jaguars did. So why should they worry about the Rams?

After losing by 40 to the Seahawks and not putting up any points in that game, I could see St. Louis getting their first win against the Jags, especially when out of their best receivers, one of them happens to be Torry Holt.

Baltimore Ravens (3-2) at Minnesota Vikings (5-0)

After getting hosed by the officials two weeks ago against the Patriots, the Ravens 'D' fell victim to the Carson Show late in the game. Now the Ravens are beyond pissed off about their future. And they look to take their frustrations out on a familiar foe.

The Vikings are undefeated. No, that's not a typo. The Vikings are 5-0, first in the NFC North and Brett Favre has yet to make a mistake this season. To make it even better for them, they seem to play tougher at home than on the road, with the exception of last week's performance against the Rams. Now they get to face that defense that makes Brett have that Jesse James-like grin on his face.

This game will go down to the wire mainly because of the way that Joe Flacco plays. He kind of reminds me of a young Brett Favre, which can be both good and bad. Either way, Flacco vs. Favre should make for some really good football.

New York Giants (5-0) at New Orleans Saints (4-0)

On paper, this is the game of the week. On paper, this is a game that could determine who gets the top seed in the postseason. On paper, this game says a lot of things.

But in reality, this game is more than that.

The Giants and Saints are playing great this season. Both teams are undefeated with stingy and tenacious defenses. Eli Manning and Drew Brees are tougher than they appear, and both intend to play this game to the best of their abilities. It's Conference USA vs. Big Ten on offense and the mother of all defensive showdowns on the horizon.

Cleveland Browns (1-4) at Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2)

The Browns finally know what it's like to win a game as they pull off a victory over the mediocre Bills last week. But now they have a tough order on their plate as they battle the Steelers. Whether it's Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson at the helm, this will not be a pretty game for the Browns in Heinz Field.

The Steelers were considered washed up when they fell to 1-2. Now Big Ben is playing like the franchise player that he's expected to be. It seems like his little trip to the WWE Universe to guest host RAW alongside his offensive line paid off as they held off a late rally by the Lions on Sunday.

Does the defense have enough in the tank to contain what little offense the Browns have? Or will Cleveland make two in a row?

Carolina Panthers (1-3) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-5)

We'll keep this segment short and to the point: Two teams that stink and need a win badly meet this weekend. For the Panthers, they avoided an 0-4 start, but still need to win to bounce back from their already dismal season. For the Bucs, they have lost six straight and need a victory to get the hopes back in their franchise as well as their fanbase.

Kansas City Chiefs (0-5) at Washington Redskins (2-3)

Another one of those short and to the point games: Two teams having dismal seasons. Todd Haley has suffered some severe setbacks, including last week's OT loss to Dallas. For the Skins, they will be known as the team that gave Detroit their first win in over a year. Something has to give when an 0-5 KC team faces a Redskins team that should be 0-5.

Philadelphia Eagles (3-1) at Oakland Raiders (1-4)

Donovan McNabb is back in full force as quarterback of the Eagles. Fantasy owners can begin cringing now. The Eagles are winning, which makes a lot of people feel better about the Phillies back in the NLCS. So what does this mean for the two involved states? With the Eagles playing Oakland and the Phillies playing the Dodgers, which will you be wanting to watch more?

Arizona Cardinals (2-2) at Seattle Seahawks (2-3)

The Cards and Seahawks used to be a great matchup...that is until they both decided not to play to their full potential. So it's Kurt Warner vs. Matt Hasselbeck for the right to claim second place behind San Francisco in the Not-So-Wild West. If you have something better to do during this game, do it.

Tennessee Titans (0-5) at New England Patriots (3-2)

Vince Young is in. Kerry Collins is out. The Titans still lost the game, but people seem to be rallying behind the return of Young. On the other side, you got the New England Patriots who just lost a huge one in the Mile High City against the surprising Broncos. Will the Titans get their first victory? Or will the Patriots get back what it theirs, the AFC East?

Buffalo Bills (1-4) at New York Jets (3-2)

The Bills stink. Buffalo hasn't delivered any punishment since their win over the Patriots. Now they're at the bottom of the barrel with no end in sight. Insert the Jets, who enter with a two-game losing streak, including a game ending loss to the Dolphins last night. Just like that, the Jets have lost the top spot in the AFC East, but can get it back with a win over the Bills on Sunday.

Sunday Night Football: Chicago Bears (3-1) at Atlanta Falcons (3-1)

The Bears are 3-1 with new quarterback Jay Cutler. The Falcons are 3-1 with their quarterback Matt Ryan. With two teams vying for supremacy in their respective divisions, something has to give in the Georgia Dome when 'Da Bears' and 'Da Dirty Birds' lock it up in the Spotlight of NBC's Sunday Night Football.

Monday Night Football: Denver Broncos (5-0) at San Diego Chargers (2-2)

The Bolts have been losing their thunder one week at a time. On the other side, you have the most surprising team in the NFL right now. New Coach (McDaniels). New QB (Orton). New Look (Those Banana Colored Jerseys). It's all lead to the Denver Broncos being 5-0, atop the AFC West and #1 in the NFL Power Rankings.

So on Monday Night, it's the newly resurrected Broncos traveling to Southern California to face the always dangerous Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers. Will the Chargers hand the Orange Crush their first loss of the season? Or will the victory over Tom Brady and the Pats be enough motivation to take down their division rivals?

White-hot offenses ruled the college football scene last year, but this season is all about stone-cold defense, Peter Schrager says.

Last year it was all about the offense on the Drive to the Championship. But when it came time for Bowl Season, it was the defenses that lived by the Ravens' old moniker: Defense wins Championships! And who better to prove that than the top two teams in the Top 25.

So what is in store for the Top 25?

#1 Florida Gators (5-0, 3-0 SEC)

  • Last Game: W vs. #10 LSU 13-3
  • Up Next: vs. Arkansas, @ Mississippi State, vs. Georgia, vs. Vandy

The Gators showed that they didn't need Tim Tebow as much as expected against the Tigers. Jordan Jefferson did his best to hold his own against the mighty Gators, but in the end, it wasn't enough as he couldn't get his team into the end zone. The Gators defense showed why they are the best in the land, and they'll look to prove it again as the upset minded Razorbacks come to "Da Swamp" to face the toughest team in the country.

#2 Alabama Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC)

  • Last Game: W vs. Ole Miss 22-3
  • Up Next: vs. #22 South Carolina, vs. Tennessee, vs. #10 LSU, @ Mississippi State

The Crimson Tide followed suit when it came to defense as they turned Jevan Sneed into a mediocre quarterback on his own turf. Greg McElroy continues to prove doubters wrong, and Mark Ingram continues to show why he is the new dark horse in the Heisman Race. But if the Tide look to make another run to the SEC Championship Game, they will have to contend with a dangerous Gamecocks team and a more motivated LSU ball club in two weeks.

#3 Texas Longhorns (5-0, 2-0 Big XII)

  • Last Game: W vs. Colorado 38-14
  • Up Next: vs. #20 Oklahoma, @ Missouri, @ #16 Oklahoma State, vs. UCF

The Longhorns didn't look so tough in the first half against the Buffaloes as they were down by four at the half. But Colt and Co. chose to wake up at the perfect time as they shut down Colorado's upset plans in the second half. But with Sam Bradford back in the saddle and looking like the Heisman winner of old, does Colt have enough fire left in him to take down the Sooners one more time in the Red River Classic?

#4 Virginia Tech Hokies (5-1, 3-0 ACC)

  • Last Game: W vs. Boston College 48-14
  • Up Next: @ #19 Georgia Tech, vs. North Carolina, @ East Carolina, @ Maryland

The Hokies have proven that they are the toughest team in the ACC by pulling off five straight wins since their opening season loss. But they got a tough couple of slabs on their plate as they face a trifecta of upset minded teams in the form of Georgia Tech, North Carolina and East Carolina. Are the Hokies primed for another run at the ACC Championship? Or will the Jackets, Heels and Pirates be the one that delivers the fatal blow to ACC's BCS National Championship Dreams?

#5 Boise State Broncos (5-0, 1-0 WAC)

  • Last Game: 10/3 W vs. Cal-Davis 34-16
  • Up Next: @ Tulsa, @ Hawaii, vs. San Jose State, @ Louisiana Tech

The Broncos have quietly made their way to the top five in a conference where there is no real competition. Sure, Idaho looks like they could make a run to WAC Championship, but on paper, they looked overmatched. But before their November 14th showdown, Boise State will have to lock horns with Tulsa and Hawaii before entertaining the Bulldogs of LA Tech and having their shootout with the Vandals.

#6) USC Trojans (4-1, 2-1 Pac-10)

  • Last Game: 10/3 W vs. Cal 30-3
  • Up Next: @ Notre Dame, vs. Oregon State, @ #13 Oregon, @ Arizona State

The Trojans bounced back from that upset loss of Washington with a huge 27-point trouncing of Cal. But now that the bye week has passed, and they got a different version of Notre Dame on the horizon. But it doesn't get any easier as they have Oregon State coming to town, and the following week, it's a battle for the top spot in the Pac-10 Conference as they travel to Eugene to face the Ducks with the Pac-10 lead on the line.

#7 Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten)

  • Last Game: W vs. Wisconsin 31-13
  • Up Next: @ Purdue, vs. Minnesota, vs. New Mexico State, @ Penn State

The Buckeyes proved that they can win against the toughest in the conference. After a convincing win over the previously undefeated Badgers, the Buckeyes have a relatively light schedule on tap before they dance with the Nittany Lions in Beaver Stadium and come home to entertain the shockingly good Iowa Hawkeyes in the Shoe, who already have defeated Penn State and Michigan this season.

#8 Cincinnati Bearcats (5-0, 1-0 Big East)

  • Last Game: 10/3 W vs. Miami (OH) 37-13
  • Up Next: @ #21 South Florida, vs. Louisville, @ Syracuse, vs. UConn

The Bearcats have had no real competition this season, but that's all about to change. They got a pair of dangerous teams coming up within the next 30 days. First is a trip to the football capital of the country, Florida, to face the undefeated Bulls of South Florida with Big East lead written all over it. After some battles with Louisville, Syracuse and UConn, they have another fierce battle with the West Virginia Mountaineers for yet another Big East lead.

#9 Miami (FL) Hurricanes (4-1, 2-1 ACC)

  • Last Game: W vs. FAMU 48-16
  • Up Next: @ UCF, vs. Clemson, @ Wake Forest, vs. Virginia

The Hurricanes have an easy road to a possible rematch with Virginia Tech. But they got Wake Forest in between their supposed easy schedule, and Wake is good this year. To make matters even trickier for the Canes, they got the Tar Heels and Blue Devils before a date with the South Florida Bulls to finish the season. If they survive their final stretch of ACC Games, they could play for the ACC Championship if Tech falls during their ACC Run.

#10 LSU Tigers (5-1, 3-1 SEC)

  • Last Game: L vs. #1 Florida 13-3
  • Up Next: vs. Auburn, vs. Tulane, @ #2 Alabama, vs. Louisiana Tech

The Tigers don't have much to smile about this week. Yes, they took Florida to the limit, but they couldn't even get into the end zone against that mighty Gators Defense. So their hopes for a trip to the SEC Championship Game now rests in the hands of a few of their SEC foes to knock off the Gators before the SEC Championship ends. As for LSU, they got a few trap games of their own as they face Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss and Arkansas to finish off their SEC slate.
